Gaute Ormåsen (born April 20, 1983, in Brumunddal, Ringsaker municipality) is a Norwegian singer and songwriter with a versatile career. He first gained national recognition in 2003 when he finished as runner-up in the very first season of Idol Norway, marking the beginning of a long and varied musical journey.
After Idol, he signed with BMG and released his debut album New Kid in Town, which included the song “Chasing Rainbows.” The track became a hit on the Norwegian charts and established him as a widely

artist. In 2006, he followed up with the album G for Gaute, where the single “Kjærlighet er mer enn forelskelse” became one of his most well-known songs.
Gaute has participated several times in Melodi Grand Prix, Norway’s national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2010, he competed with the song “Synk eller svøm,” and in 2013 with “Awake.” His biggest breakthrough in pop, however, came in 2022 when—together with Ben Adams—he won the competition as one half of the masked duo Subwoolfer. With the song “Give That Wolf a Banana,” they represented Norway in Eurovision in Turin, finishing in a strong 10th place. The duo’s identity was not revealed until after the competition, which generated significant media attention.
In 2023, Gaute returned to pop music as a songwriter with the track “Freya,” performed by Maria Celin, reaffirming his role as a creative force in Norwegian pop. The following year, in 2024, he presented a new entry for Melodi Grand Prix in collaboration with Super Rob, demonstrating his continued involvement in both the competition and the music industry.
In addition to his solo career and work with Subwoolfer, Gaute has written songs for other artists and collaborated with international names such as Alan Walker and Robin Schulz. He has also appeared in TV series like Hotel Cæsar and participated in popular shows such as Skal vi danse and Stjernekamp.
With a career spanning more than two decades, Gaute Ormåsen has established himself as a versatile and respected artist in the Norwegian music scene. He continues to explore new styles and collaborations and is known for combining strong melodies with honest and compelling lyrics.
